WELLS COMMUNITY SCHOOL CELEBRATES WITH PANCAKE BREAKFAST

The community of Wells came out in force on Thursday, October 25th to celebrate the opening of the new Wells Community Fitness Centre at the Wells Community School.
The event, which was held in conjunction with a yummy pancake breakfast put on by the children at the school, was part introduction and part celebration. Carol McGregor, the Marketing & Economic Development Officer for the District of Wells, was a key force in helping bring the gym to Wells, and she briefly touched on all the hard work that had gone into its creation, saying that the gym is part of the District of Wells' goal of creating a healthy and active community.
Mayor Jay Vermette was on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon, and he elaborated on Carol's comments, noting that the District of Wells had received generous funding from the 2010 Olympic Live Site program as well as the Northern Trust to help construct the new fitness centre. Unfortunately for all in attendance Mayor Vermette declined the opportunity to demonstrate the new equipment for the assembled crowd.

Although the grand opening of the facility has already taken place, patrons are being asked to hold off using the gym until taking an orientation session.
There are currently two orientation sessions planned, both with Heather Hartridge, a personal trainer based out of Quesnel.
The sessions will be taking place on Monday, November 5th from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
The orientations are free, and all current and prospective members are encouraged to attend.
Current fees for using the Wells Fitness Centre are as follows:
- $15.00 per month
-
$75.00 for six months
-
$120.00 for 12 months
- $5.00 drop-in fee
There is a $25.00 key deposit required for everyone. If you are receiving a free membership ( i.e. police, fire brigade, ambulance etc..) you will need to bring a $25.00 deposit to receive your key. The $25.00 must either be cash or cheque.
The Wells Community Fitness Centre is only available for persons 16-years-of-age or older. For more information on Wells Community Fitness Centre, or to join up, please stop by the District of Wells office located at 4243 Sanders Avenue, or call (250) 994-3330.

MUTUAL AID AGREEMENT HELPS ENSURE VITAL ASSET IS PROTECTED

As part of their mandate to provide fire protection to the community, the Wells Volunteer Fire Brigade helps ensure the safety of Barkerville Historic Town through a mutual aid agreement between the District of Wells and the Barkerville Heritage Trust.
In order to ensure that the brigade members are up to speed on the types of structures and location of the fire fighting equipment in Barkerville Historic Town, the Wells Fire Brigade holds scheduled practices at the townsite with Ray Bellu, a former Quesnel Fire Chief who works as a fire protection liaison for Barkerville Historic Town.
If you are interested in joining the Wells FIre Brigade, stop by one of the practices at the Wells Firehall. Practices take place weekly on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM.

IMAGES FROM WELLS AND AREA

Continuing on last month's theme of looking up, an unknown group of Wells residents recently created an outdoor art exhibit on Pooley St.
Strung high above the local thoroughfare, the banners are a colourful display for locals and visitors alike.
What do you think of this latest addition to downtown Wells?
