More Than Just GoldWells Fire Brigade Practices Live Burn
LOCAL VOLUNTEERS WORK TO KEEP COMMUNITY SAFE
On Wednesday, September 26 the Wells Volunteer Fire Brigade held a special practice in which they burnt a derelict building adjacent to the Wells Fire Hall.
The purpose of the exercise was to practice a number of various elements of firefighting, from the use of SCBA breathing apparatus, to the deployment of both the regular fire truck as well as the Compressed Air Foam Truck.
The exercise was a resounding success, with excellent firefighter turnout, and a safe, well-controlled burn.
If you are interested in joining the Wells Volunteer Fire Brigade, practices take place Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM at the Wells Fire Hall, located at 2314 Baker St. in downtown Wells.

New Newspaper to Start in Wells
WELLS CHRONICLE TO BEGIN PUBLISHING IN OCTOBER

The Wells, Barkerville, and Bowron Lake communities are getting a new version of the Wells Chronicle.
This monthly newspaper will be available for distribution on or about the 20th of each month. The first issue will be available at the end of October 2007 with a calendar of events for November on the back. Your Wells Chronicle editor is Aleta Wallace.
Mike and Aleta Wallace moved to Wells from Salmon Arm on May 1st this year. They have spent the summer working in Barkerville, repairing and renovating their home, and becoming a part of the Wells Volunteer Fire Brigade. They have owned Mike’s grandparents’ property on Lowhee since October 2000, been directors on the Friends of Barkerville’s board when they lived in Quesnel (1999-2001), and visited this area extensively for twenty years prior to moving here.
This summer, Aleta’s experience working in Barkerville demonstrated that our region supports a solid entrepreneurial effort. She was impressed by the dedicated professionalism of her employers and is grateful for the valuable knowledge gained while working for them. Their examples have encouraged her to start the Wells Chronicle.
Aleta hopes to include reports from our area’s clubs, organizations, schools, and municipal government as timing and her budget allow. There will be sections for real estate, classifieds, and announcements. Columns on history, the arts, entertainment, and other topics will be published when possible.
Ad rates, subscription rates and other information will be posted online. To place an ad, make an inquiry, or carry the paper contact the Wells Chronicle – Aleta Wallace, Editor. Barkerville Historic Town and Bowron Lake Park Free until May!
INTERPRETERS, BUSINESSES AND PARK CONTRACTORS CLOSED FOR THE SEASON

As the calendar turns to October, and the days gradually get shorter and cooler, the number of people visiting the Wells, Barkerville and Bowron Lakes area starts to dissipate. Although the majority of businesses in Wells are still open, both Barkerville Historic Town and Bowron Lakes Provincial Park have ceased their main operations for the season.
Visitors are still encouraged to visit both Barkerville Historic Town and Bowron Lake Provincial Park, as neither of the sites officially "close", but they should be aware that the site interpretation, businesses and main visitor services are no longer running at Barkerville Historic Town, and the registration centre and park staff are not available on Bowron Lake Provincial Park.
Barkerville Historic Town will be re-open for Old Fashioned Christmas on December 15th and 16th, and both Barkerville Historic Town and Bowron Lake Provincial Park will re-open in May 2008.
For more information on Barkerville Historic Town visit www.barkerville.ca. For more information on Bowron Lake Provincial Park visit the following site.

IMAGES FROM WELLS AND AREA

Look up, look way up... What do you see? Nothing.
Acting on numerous complaints from local residents, Telus workers dismantled the old Telus communications dish that had fallen into serious disrepair over the years.
Although the tower remains intact, the skyline is no longer blighted by the sight of the tattered dish.
